Through sound expressions using antique instruments and recycled materials, the record work creates a space that moves between vision and sound, material and memory.

DAISY BALLOON’s CALL series has developed from an experience in which the artists encountered an injured young girl in a park. The memory of the girl’s wordless voice has remained within the artists, continuously transforming over time.

The cracks and fragments appearing on the surfaces of the balloons emerge as images reminiscent of fractured landscapes or the surfaces of unknown planets, tracing the drift and instability of memory itself. Moving between macro and micro perspectives, these images reflect the accumulation of time and the ongoing transformation of memory.

The subtle tremors and traces of presence that emerge within them resonate differently within each viewer, responding as individual “SIGNALS.”

On the final day of the exhibition, May 30 (Sat.), a closing event featuring a live performance by Mamiko Hirai and an installation accompanied by a talk by Takashi Kawada of DAISY BALLOON will be held.

—Artist Statement—

We came across a young girl at a park. She was injured, so we did what we could with just a small emergency kit. We asked her questions, but she did not answer. She did not speak any words. She only moaned as she trembled. We were heartbroken that we were not able to comfort her.

That encounter has been ingrained in our memories since that day. Our recollection of that little girl continues to drift along and transform into new realities. In an attempt to communicate once again with that little girl in our memory, we picked up a whistle, hoping the sound would travel much farther than our voices would. It was a way for us to hear her voice in a form other than words.

We would sound the whistle from afar as we traced her tracks, getting closer, until one moment, we discovered that the new realities forming in our memory were the actual signals from the girl.

We came to believe that memories are perhaps fragmented particles of past experiences that sometimes come together and drift along, taking different forms. Sometimes, they erode and disappear. Sometimes they join together to form something greater.

DAISY BALLOON

PROFILE

Rie Hosokai / Takashi Kawada　 　 　 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Photo by Sai

DAISY BALLOON

An artist unit comprising balloon artist Rie Hosokai and art director/graphic designer Takashi Kawada.
